DaimlerChrysler SA’s Jeep division has launched a limited-run Grand Cherokee Black Pearl Edition fitted with a more powerful 2,7-litre five-cylinder common-rail turbodiesel engine.
DaimlerChrysler SA’s Jeep division has launched a limited-run Grand Cherokee Black Pearl Edition fitted with a more powerful 2,7-litre five-cylinder common-rail turbodiesel engine.
The new high-output CRD powerplant is mechanically identical to the unit doing duty in the Grand Cherokee Laredo 2,7L CRD, but has been fitted with a new engine control module that alters its management system, changing timing, retardation, fuel supply and turbo wastegate opening pressures.
Jeep claims the engine, which now becomes the standard power-unit fitted to all diesel Grand Cherokee Overland derivatives, is 25 per cent more powerful (from 120 to 150 kW) and produces 12,5 per cent more torque (from 400 to 450 N.m).
The High Output 2,7L CRD is said to accelerate from zero to 60 km/h in 4,88 seconds, reaching 100 km/h in 10,65 seconds and a top speed of 186,9 km/h. Standstill to 400 m (the quarter mile) is said to be completed in 17,76 seconds with a terminal speed of 128,9 km/h.
In terms of mid-range accleration, High Output 2,7L CRD-powered Grand Cherokees are claimed to accelerate from 60 to 100 km/h (kickdown) in 5,86 seconds and
80 to 120 km/h (kickdown) in 7,52 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Black Pearl Edition of the Grand Cherokee has a new chrome grille and other detailing. Inside, there is a two-tone leather steering wheel, and black Microtech wooden inserts on the dash, door panels and centre console replace the California Redwood Burl units found on the standard Overland.
Up to 145 Black Pearl Edition models will be sold – in both 2,7L CRD (70) and 4,7L V8 (75) derivatives.
“The continual advancement of diesel technology necessitates an evolvement in terms of performance and fuel economy, especially in the 4×4 category,” DCSA’s Chrysler and Jeep divisional manager Trent Barcroft says. “This demand from our customers and the advancement in technology has resulted in our new high-output CRD engine.”
