More than two years ago, we announced that Sealy, Texas-based Hennessey Performance was underway with an exciting project that combined American muscle and a high-tech lightweight chassis called the Venom GT. After we’ve had to make do with several grainy renderings, the firm has finally released official images of its latest brute.
Based on the Lotus Elise, the Venom GT weighs just 1 071 kg, thanks to the extensive use of carbon-fibre throughout its structure, including its wheels. The chassis and exterior of the Venom GT will be built at the firm’s assembly plant in Silverstone, England, while the engines will be prepared at the Texas facility.
“This is not the first time that Britain and America have joined forces to produce a weapon of mass propulsion. Over fifty years ago the American-built P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft was flown into history powered by a British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Today the Hennessey Venom GT promises to set a new standard of power to weight ratio in the rarefied air of today’s supercar market,” said company founder and president, John Hennessey.
The Venom GT’s sting comes from a Corvette ZR1-sourced 6,2-litre supercharged V8, modified to produce in excess of 540 kW – sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed gearbox. The company will also offer a twin-turbocharged powerplant in two states of tune, producing 746 kW and 895 kW respectively.
All that grunt is kept in check by a programmable traction control system, and stopping power is provided by Brembo – with 6- and 4-piston calipers, front and rear, that clamp down on 380 mm carbon ceramic brake discs. Adjustable suspension and Michelin Pilot Sport tyres are standard.
Venom GT buyers will be offered a driver orientation and instruction program by a Hennessey factory test driver, at a track in the United Kingdom or United States of America prior to delivery.
