The Volkswagen Amarok double cab was the most talked-about bakkie of 2010 and, in total, over 2 500 have already been sold locally. Not content with this success, VW will launch its next assault on the segment stalwarts with the Amarok single cab at the 2011 Nampo Harvest Day outside the Free State dorp of Bothaville, which runs from 17 to 20 May.
The same 2,0-litre turbodiesel engine that powers the double cab will also power this version. It isn't yet clear if the single or double turbocharged variant will be used but, given the hard life single cabs are generally subjected to, we would bet on the lower-tech 90 kW/340 N.m engine. The 120 kW/400 N.m version might then be launched later to target leisure users.
Visitors will also be able to meet South African race legend Sarel van der Merwe at the show.
