Volkswagen have announced that the Volkswagen Golf R400 concept seen at last year’s Beijing Motor Show will go into production and be launched in 2016.

After much speculation about the likelihood of the 294 kW concept making it to the showroom floor, VW Group powertrain chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser has confirmed that the Wolfsburg automakers will “soon have the Golf R 400… we are in fact in development right now.”

According to British Car magazine, the production R400’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine will have even more power than the concept’s with a figures of 309 kW mentioned (no word on the torque though).

Power will be to all four wheels with VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system and bigger brakes are likely given the extra power. Expect its looks to be typically understated with a new aerodynamic kit.

The new King Of The Golfs will likely make its debut in September at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show before going on sale in Europe ine early 2016.
