We highly rate the new Volkswagen Golf R. It can be seen as the everyday gentelman’s hot (super?) hatch. The GTI is also a favourite among South Africans, with a significant chunk of Golf sales going to this 162 kW hatch.
However, South Africans are not fond of stationwagons, or estates. That is not the case in Europe though. There is a huge market for these load luggers, and it seems Volkswagen is trying to get a piece of this high performance estate pie.
As the pictures show, an estate version of the Golf R has again been spotted lapping the Nürburgring. The lights, bumper and side sills seem to be represent the same design as that found on the hatch. At the rear is the same set of quadruple exhaust pipes that dominate proceedings of the five-door version.
Expect the drivetrain to be the same as that of the hatch. This means the four-cylinder, 2,0-litre, turbocharged petrol engine delivering 206 kW and 380 N.m.
When we tested the Golf R DSG for our April issue, we managed to extract a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5,23 seconds. Expect the estate version to be a few tenths of a second slower though.
Even so, hats off to Volkswagen for building such a car. Question is, will VWSA bring it to South Africa? We can only hope.
The Golf R estate/stationwagon (or Variant, as it is called overseas) should be unveiled at the Essen Motor Show in December.
