With electric vehicles becoming more mainstream, manufacturers are throwing everything in their arsenal at producing electric vehicles that are better than the rest. Volkswagen is no different, and it is planning on debuting a four-seat diesel-electric hybrid concept of its Up, called the Twin-Up.
The concept is said to make use of an 800 cm3 two-cylinder diesel engine, in combination with a plug-in electric motor. The Twin-Up has a combined power output of 55 kW and 215 N.m. The powertrain is mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
With a relatively light weight of just 1 205 kg, the Twin-Up can travel up to 50 km under electric power alone and uses only 1,1 litres of fuel per 100 km when utilising the diesel engine. The Twin-Up returns a very modest 27 grams of CO2 per kilometre. Volkswagen claims a limited top speed of 140 km/h.
Even though Volkswagen is planning to debut the Twin-Up concept at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, it has not yet decided whether the Twin-Up will go into production.
