Official images and details of the Volvo Concept Coupe have been has released. The official unveil is set to take place at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
Underpinned by Volvo’s versatile new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, this striking concept features a low bonnet and roof, five-spoke, 21-inch wheels and a floating front grille that’s flanked by new T-shaped LED daytime running lights. These lights will form an important part of the new Volvo design language. Volvo’s new senior vice-president of design, Thomas Ingenlath, has said that this concept takes some inspiration from the P1800 coupe because of this iconic car’s “beautiful forms and detailing”.
Inside, there is a large touchscreen display in the centre console, head-up display and handcrafted leather, wood and glass trim.
Ingenlath has made it clear that this concept is “no futuristic dream car”. The idea is that most of the design elements make its way into the new Volvo design language that will start with the XC90 in 2014.
“Even though the all-new XC90 is an entirely different type of car, you will recognise the connection instantly when it is revealed next year,” says Ingenlath.
The state-of-the-art SPA platform will also allow Volvo to make use of autonomous driving features that will also be seen in the fresh XC90. One of these systems includes technology that automatically steers to avoid accidents.
The Volvo Concept Coupe makes use of a petrol plug-in hybrid drivetrain that is made up of a two-litre high-performance Drive-E petrol unit with a supercharger and turbocharger. This engine is teamed with an electric motor on the rear axle. The total power output of around 300 kW and torque in the region of 600 N.m.
