Volkswagen is due to launch its high-profile grand saloon, the Phaeton, late next year. But before that happens, the German manufacturer will set the scene for its attack on the upper luxury market by unveiling the Passat W8, the most luxurious VW to date…

The four-litre, eight-cylinder engined Passat W8 this week made its debut on the European market and the car has been hailed by the overseas motoring media as the “most potent VW on the market” – well, at least until the marque’s W12 supercar hits the showrooms.

It has been suggested that the W8 forms a bridge into the luxury sector where VW will soon be bidding for sales with the new Phaeton. The 205 kW Passat W8 is reportedly capable of sprinting from zero to 100 km/h in 6,5 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h.

The first models are likely to appear on the road by January. Both saloon and estate versions are on offer but early versions will have a five-speed tiptronic gearbox. A six-speed manual will be added to the line-up at a later stage.

According to Hoot!, VW’s 4MOTION four-wheel drive system, electronic stability programme, six airbags, bi-Xenon headlights, leather and walnut trim will be standard features on the Passat W8.
