When VW’s popular B-segment hatch, the Polo, was updated earlier this year there were view cosmetic revisions… the bulk of the enhancements took place under the skin and the same holds true for the range-topping GTI model.
The same subtle visual cues have been transferred to the Polo GTI but the big news is what lies under the bonnet. VW’s twin-charged 1,4-litre motor has been replaced by a 1,8-litre direct-injection, turbocharged engine.
Peak power is now quoted as 140 kW with a maximum torque value of 320 N.m, which brings its outputs very close to those of turbo hatches from the C-segment.
VW has chosen to offer the latest Polo GTI with its slick DSG transmission AND a six-speed manual gearbox, which is great news for those to prefer a little more engaging driving experience. According to VWSA, the local model will be a five-door and the while the DSG model is confirmed, the manual version is still under consideration.
According to VW the 0-100 km/h sprint has been dropped by 0,2 seconds to 6,7 and the top speed is up to 236 km/h from a the previous car’s 228.
The revised Polo GTI will make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show next month and will arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of next year. Those who remain undecided about the tartan-pattern upholstery of the car shown here, don’t fret: the local models will be trimmed in a combination of black leather and alcantara!
