The VW vs Opel GTI grudge battle comes out into the open over the Easter weekend when the GTI Challenge is held at Killarney racetrack in the Cape.

The newly formed Cape Town chapter of the Opel Owners Club is determined to take the silverware away from VW, which has won the annual event for the past four years. The day's racing will put drivers and machines to the test, and handling and skill will win the day. Two other main events include the 600m sprint and 400m drag. Cars will compete in a dual course set-up, as per rally super special style. This provides for some close racing and gets the crowd going.

There will be classes for all models and different levels of modifications, from the standard 1300 to the turbo class cars.

Later in the day, some of Cape Town's most talented rear wheel drivers will fight it out for the "Most Controlled" or "Most Spectacular" drivers in a "Sideways Competition". There is sure to be lots of smoke, wheel spinning and drifting to entertain the crowds.

Racing will be under strict Motorsport SA regulations, with safety the main factor. Trained marshals and paramedics will be on hand.

The pit area will be the venue for auto exhibits, with all sorts of spares and accessories on display/for sale. There will also be an array of food and drink stalls. The Red Cross Children's Hospital has been invited to the event, and drivers and spectators are encouraged to bring along a blanket, toy or even a few sweets on the day. These can be handed in at the Red Cross stand in the pit area.

Across at the middle of the track, the very popular sound-off will be held, with two cars parked side-by-side competing for the highest decibel rating. Competitors will score points and be entered into forthcoming sound-off championship. All the rules are on the web at www.dbdrag.com.

All interested drivers for the track events need to enter and scrutineer on Friday 18 or Saturday April 19 from 2 - 5 pm, at Killarney racetrack. Helmets & Seatbelts are compulsory. Entries for the sound-off may be made on the day.
