Volkswagen SA is entering the medium commercial vehicle market with the introduction of the imported range of LT panel vans.
Jolyon Nash, VWSA’s sales and marketing director, says the LT’s introduction is the culmination of a product strategy over a number of years.
“Over the past four years our efforts have mainly focussed on expanding our passenger car range with locally-manufactured cars and a careful selection of imports. We have now reached what we believe to be a position of strength. This allows us to expand further the commercial vehicle market, in which we have previously been represented only by the CitiGolf-based Caddy and Caddy Club,” said Nash.
Two models will be available in South Africa; the LT 35 with a medium wheelbase and either a standard or high roof, and the LT46 with a long wheelbase, available only with a high roof.
The LT is powered by the 5-cylinder 2,5TDI motor, which produces 80kW and top speeds of up to 141km/h. The 4-cylinder 2.8TDI producing 116kW is especially powerful, in response to customers’ wishes to have more power and torque available to ferry of bigger loads.
All models are fitted with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) as standard equipment and height-adjustable 3-point seatbelts for two front passengers. Other standard features across the range include; an electronic immobiliser, power steering and a manual heating system.
Front airbags, central locking, air conditioning, cruise control and weight adjustable seats are optional extras.
The Volkswagen LT will be available at selected dealers countrywide and comes standard with a two-year unlimited mileage warranty and a 24 hour alert line in the event of a breakdown.
