Wireless-device charging

By: Nicol Louw

Delphi is developing a completely cordless charging environment for consumer electronics in cars. With the current trend of people owning an ever-increasing number of personal electronic devices (cellphones, tablets, GPSs, portable music devices and so on), a vehicle’s cabin can easily become cluttered with charge cables to keep the units running. The new wireless technology consists of hidden power-source resonators that emit a magnetic field that will be capable of charging several electronic devices at the same time. Magnetic-resonance technology is superior to the traditional induction-charging systems because the electronic device does not need to be close to or resting on the inductive coil to receive a charge. The magnetic resonators will automatically activate once an electronic device is detected in the vehicle. Delphi hopes to bring the system to market in 2014.
