There’s a sense of power, control and security that many people feel behind the wheel of a sport-utility vehicle and it seems more women are in search of that feeling.
A recent research study found that SUVs are the first choice for many female new vehicle buyers.
According to automotive research firm RL Polk & Co, this amounts to 23,9 per cent of the women’s market. Ford’s Explorer was at the top of the list of SUVs sold to women, followed by the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
SUVs had previously been the favourite among male new vehicle buyers. About 25 per cent of new vehicle sales went to men, whereas pickups accounted for 21 per cent of male new car buyers.
“After years of steadily gaining market share, the SUV finally can be crowned king of the American road,” said Lonnie Miller, an analytic consultant for Polk.
Midsize cars were second most popular with female buyers, coming in with 23,2 per cent of the women’s market.
