Subaru has slowly but surely been tweaking its Impreza range into the line-up of vehicles that we had all expected from the start. Last year the WRX saloon debuted in South Africa, and was well-received. But now there’s more to come.
Due in America very soon, and possibly headed our way, too, is the latest WRX saloon, now featuring the wide-body stance of the STI hatchback. With front and rear tracks that are around 38 mm wider than on the existing car, firmer rear subframe bushings and wider 17-inch wheels and tyres, Subaru claims even more grip than the current car serves up.
Under the bonnet is the marque’s proven turbocharged 2,5-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine that delivers 195 kW and 343 N.m of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is fitted.
Visually the car is easily distinguishable by its STI-like aerodynamic add-ons and bulging wheelarches.
Subaru South Africa has hinted before that a STI variant of the saloon could be in the works. The launch of a wide-body WRX saloon certainly creates the impression that Subaru is once again taking the four-door saloon bodystyle seriously. Let’s hold thumbs.
