The manufacturer sold more than 130 000 vehicles in its 64 world markets last year. The introduction of the X-Type in 2001 helped boost sales. The smaller Jaguar topped 100 000 sales last year since its 2001 launch.
In its largest market, the US, Jaguar sold more than 61 000 vehicles, representing growth of 37 per cent on 2001, with the X-Type making up half of these sales.
In the UK, nearly 30 000 vehicles were sold – also an increase of 37 per cent on 2001. Two-thirds of these sales were made up by the X-Type, while the rest of the sales were made up of the S-Type, a revised version of which was introduced in March.
The X-Type was launched in South Africa in 2002 and this also helped sales locally, with the company saying sales increased by 70,2 per cent. “This translates into a total of 618 units sold compared with the 363 sold in 2001. This increase was surely assisted by the launch of the X-Type, although the S, XJ and XK-Jaguar models all held their volumes during 2002,” said George Haward, managing director of Jaguar Cars South Africa.
“During the year, Jaguar South Africa added dealerships in Umhlanga and Bedfordview, bringing the total to six dealers countrywide with more locations under consideration. In addition, Jaguar Bryanston underwent a significant upgrade to establish one of the premier dealerships in the region. A dedicated customer care line (0860 308 400) was also introduced in 2002 to address and facilitate any concerns and complaints customers might have,” said Haward.
“The year 2003 is set to be another positive year for Jaguar SA and we are aiming for another year-on-year improvement in sales and customer satisfaction. Customers can also look forward to the imminent mid-year launch of the all-new Jaguar XJ.”
