Here at CAR magazine, we take every new vehicle we feature to our test strip to gather data for our in-depth road tests. Sometimes, we see some pretty impressive results.

Below we have listed the best average 100-0 km/h times we’ve collected in 2019 (each vehicle goes through a punishing ten-stop procedure, allowing us to calculate its average braking time). To determine which car places higher in the event of a tie, we went back to the test results and looked at the best single braking time achieved by the vehicles in question.

10. Mercedes-AMG CLS53 4Matic+ 9G-Tronic – 2,76 seconds

Not only is this the only AMG on this list, it’s also the only hybrid (utilising a 48 V EQ Boost system in conjunction with a turbocharged 3,0-litre straight-six). The CLS53 impressively brings itself to a stop from 100 km/h in just 2,76 seconds.

9. Audi RS5 Sportback Quattro Tiptronic – 2,75 seconds

Not only does the RS5 Sportback get off the line quickly, it also brings itself to a stop in short time. The five-door model was able to achieve a stopping time of 2,75 seconds. Bear in mind this figure was achieved thanks to an optional set of carbon ceramic discs.

8. Audi RS4 Avant Quattro Tiptronic – 2,74 seconds

Slowing even more impressively than its Sportback sibling (although only marginally) was Audi's RS4 Avant, which was wearing optional ceramics as well.

7. Jaguar XJR 575 – 2,74 seconds

Despite being a hefty sedan with a heavy V8, the Jaguar XJR 575 had no issues coming to a standstill from speed. Tipping the scales at a light-for-its-size 1,9 tonnes, the 575’s combination of axle-warping power and supple chassis brilliantly counters the clumsy directional weight transfer often responsible for dulling the driving experience in larger cars.

6. Audi Q8 55 TFSI Quattro Tiptronic – 2,73 seconds

Audi’s new flagship SUV beat its smaller siblings, the RS4 and RS5, with an average stopping time of just 2,73 seconds. Ultimately, the new Q8 has plenty going for it. It’s distinct enough from its staid Q7 sibling to stand alone as a flagship model and certainly dials up the desirability factor.

5. BMW X7 M50d xDrive Steptronic – 2,73 seconds

Considering the X7's considerable weight, its stopping time is remarkable. With an average time of just 2,73 seconds (interestingly, even more impressive than the X5’s effort), it’s certainly no slouch in the braking department.

4. Peugeot 5008 1,6 THP Auto GT-Line – 2,70 seconds

Surprised to see the Peugeot 5008 here? Well, while there's nothing especially sporty about this seven-seater SUV, it certainly can stop in a hurry, achieving an average 100-0 km/h braking time of just 2,70 seconds.

3. Toyota GR Supra  2,65 seconds

There’s very little about the Toyota GR Supra that disappointed us. Braking performance is exceptional, with the sportscar coming to a halt in an average time over 10 stops of just 2,65 seconds and needing just 34,02 metres to do so.   

2. BMW Z4 M40i Steptronic – 2,61 seconds

Yes, the BMW Z4 beats its Toyota-badged twin in the braking department, achieving an average some 0,04 seconds more impressive than the Supra. With M Sport brakes, our best single stop from 100 km/h was a neck-snapping 2,49 seconds.  

1. Porsche 911 Carrera S PDK – 2,50 seconds

The brakes, like pretty much everything else on the new 911 Carrera S, are phenomenal. In fact, the S sets new CAR records, with an average of 2,50 seconds across just 32,66 metres. No car (not even one equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes) has ever required less time on our test strip...
