With the 2022 Kia Niro, the Korean manufacturer intends for this to be statement of intent for the future, a future of sustainability and efficiency.
No stranger to dabbling with sustainable mobility solutions, Kia has now revealed the all-new Niro which forms an integral part of Kia’s growing eco-friendly model line-up. Aimed at sustainability conscious consumers, the Niro features eco-friendly materials furnishing the interior and state-of-the-art electrified powertrains and features all packaged utilising the award winning Opposites United design philosophy.
A selection of different powertrains can be chosen for the Niro including hybrid electric (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric (BEV) options. Assisting the HEV model is the familiar Smartstream 1.6-litre GDI engine which enables competitive fuel efficiency claimed at 4.8l/100km. Information on the PHEV and zero emission BEV models will be revealed at a later date.
While the Smartstream gasoline engine found in the HEV is rated with a maximum power output of 77 kW with 144 N.m of torque, when combined to the 32 kW permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that number is increased to 104 kW. The transmission coupled to the engine is a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that has been carefully engineered and optimised to increase efficiency and reduce weight.
A regenerative braking system is also equipped on the Niro which allows the powertrain to recuperate kinetic energy which increases efficiency and range. Using a built-in road radar which provides gradient and surface information, the system allows the car to harvest the maximum amount of energy from its brakes while bringing the vehicle to a gentle halt.
The 2022 Kia Niro HEV and PHEV also include Kia’s Green Zone Drive Mode that automatically activates the electric-only drive operation in green zones such as residential areas, schools or hospitals to completely mitigate any emissions. The driver can also set customised green zones into the navigation system in areas within the vicinity of their home or work.
Artur Martins, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Brand and Customer Experience Division at Kia Corporation said that the 2022 Kia Niro heralds the next step in becoming a sustainable mobility solutions provider, creating a solution for people eager to practice a more tenable lifestyle.
