The boxy and enduring G-Class looks set to remain in Mercedes’ portfolio going into a certain electric future. Just because the V8 brute will be exchanged for a collection of electric motors, doesn’t mean the model will be any less fun as the Mercedes EQG demonstrates by doing strange donuts on its own axis.
First debuting the Concept EQG in September 2021 at the IAA Munich show, Mercedes has now taken strides in making it a production reality with the EQG expected to be offered to the public sometime around 2024. The newcomer G-Class will feature an optional lithium-ion battery pack with silicone anode chemistry which enables it to achieve a much further range compliments of higher-density cells.
The model has attempted to retain all of the utilitarian values of the original Geländewagen by employing a shiftable two-speed gearbox featuring a crawler gear. This, in conjunction with an electric motor on each wheel makes the Mercedes EQG an all-wheel drive EV with independent power control over each wheel. This means that it is able to do strange donuts on its own axis or better known as a tank-turn. The boxy wagon calls this party trick of its the “G” turn where it turns the wheels on one side in the opposite direction of the others, similarly to how a tank can turn and manoeuvre.
While the Mercedes spectacularly kicks up dust in its endeavours, it must be said, that this isn’t the first time a tank turn has been pioneered by an automaker with Rivian completing the nauseating exercise back in 2019 with the R1T. Despite being the first, it seems they have struggled to implement the technology on a production scale and by the looks of things, the 2024 Mercedes EQG may have just perfected the party trick instead!
