As the number of SUVs on our market grows, so too does the number of high-performance SUVs. So, we’ve decided to take a look at five of the most exciting examples (across a couple of segments) scheduled to arrive in South Africa in 2018…
1. Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio
The hottest, Quadrifoglio-badged version of Alfa’s new Stelvio is expected to land in SA in the second quarter of 2018. It uses the same 2,9-litre twin-turbo V6 first employed by the Giulia Quadrifoglio (and still worth 375 kW and 600 N.m), but is actually a little quicker to 100 km/h (at a claimed 3,8 seconds) than its sedan sibling, thanks to its all-wheel-drive system.
2. Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk
The Trackhawk version of Jeep’s Grand Cherokee is powered by a 6,2-litre V8 delivering a whopping 527 kW and 874 N.m, which the brand says is enough for a 0-100 km/h time of just 3,6 seconds. Expect this monster to touch down in the second quarter of 2018.
3. Lamborghini Urus
The new Urus – which shares its platform with the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga and Porsche Cayenne, as well as with the upcoming VW Touareg – makes use of the VW Group’s twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol, tuned to deliver 478 kW and 850 N.m (for a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 3,6 seconds). Due to arrive in the third quarter of the year, we already know how much it will cost…
4. Mercedes-AMG GLC63
The most potent version of Mercedes-Benz’s GLC will wear the “63” badge and be offered in two outputs. Both employ a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8, but the first is tuned to deliver 350 kW and 650 N.m, with the flagship “S” version taking things up a notch to 375 kW and 700 N.m. Expect coupé versions to also be offered at launch in the first quarter of 2018.
5. Porsche Cayenne Turbo
In 2018, the third-generation Cayenne will officially arrive in South Africa. And the Cayenne with the “Turbo” badge employs a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 sending 404 kW and 770 N.m to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. This results in a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4,1 seconds…
