Fiat Auto SA has introduced a two-wheel drive version of the acclaimed Panda MPV. It offers the cute styling and practicality of its 4×4 sibling, but costs less than R100k.

Hot on the four-wheeled heels of the 4×4 Panda Climbing and Trekking models comes the “normal” two-wheel drive version for those who have no need for off-road antics. Those who took a fancy to the good looks of the 4×4 version CAR tested for the September issue, can now enjoy the same funky styling and good quality interior but with drive to the front wheels alone.
The Panda, which was named European Car of the Year 2004, is powered by a 1,2-litre s-o-h-c engine (also unchanged from the 4×4 models), producing 44 kW at 5 000 r/min and 102 N.m of torque at 2 500 r/min.
Its standard specification includes air-conditioning, dualdrive electric power steering (giving an ultra-light feel at parking speeds), in-built audio system with single CD player and eight speakers, dual airbags, remote central locking, electric front windows,on-board trip and fuel consumption computer, variable time follow-me-home headlights (also height adjustable) and ABS brakes with EBD.
For such a small car, the ride is perhaps the most impressive aspect, but that is not all. The gearshift is a delight with a short throw and positive feel and the steering, too, is light but not lacking in feel and its one of the best examples of (sometimes wishy-washy) electric power steering systems available today. Brakes feel sharp and, at the coast at least, the acceleration seems adequate notwithstanding the small power output.
The exterior mirrors are adjusted by means of internally mounted stalks, 13-inch steel wheels are standard, shod with simple, sensible 155/80 profile tyres. For those who want a more sporty appearance and feel, 14-inch alloys with 165/65 profile tyres can be supplied as an option. Roof racks are also available. Any colour choice of seat upholstery can be made, as long as it’s blue or yellow, and the rear seat folds down in one piece.
Front seats have comfy backrests, but more thigh support would have been appreciated, while the rear seats are more comfortable than they look, thanks to a high mounting position that aids legroom. The boot is not very large, but a full-size spare wheel is provided. The Panda is available in red, white, solid blue and a lighter metallic blue, light green, pale yellow and, of course, black.
The vehicle costs R95 900, which includes a 24-month manufacturer warranty, unlimited mileage and an additional 12-month dealer-extended warranty or up to 100 000km in total, three years on paintwork and five years on rust anti-perforation.
