To supplement the local C-Class and E-Class model line-up, Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new four-cylinder diesel engine that also marks the 150th anniversary of Rudlof Diesel’s birth. Mercedes-Benz claims the new twin-turbocharged unit sets new benchmarks in its segment for performance and economy.
Manufactured at the company’s Untërturkheim plant, the new engine was developed with three key briefs: greater power, greater ecnonomy, and greater cleanliness, in line with the firm’s environment-saving BlueEfficiency programme.
The 2,1-litre unit is available in both model ranges, with 125 kW and 400 N.m of torque on offer in C 220 CDI guise, while the E250 CDI boasts 150 kW and 500 N.m of torque. In its most powerful setting, the turbodiesel is 20 per cent more powerful than the engine it replaces, but substantially less harmful to the environment with CO2 emission reduced by as much as 13 per cent. Mercedes-Benz claims the unit consumes just 5,8-litres per 100 km for both models.
“This takes our new four-cylinder twin-turbo unit into a realm which has so far been the preserve of the six-cylinder diesel – all combined with exemplary fuel economy,” says Reandren Thulkanam, Product Manager, Mercedes-Benz Cars.
