At the time of its launch late in 2004, an affordable 1,6-litre version was a glaring omission from the Verso line-up. Four 1,8-litre versions with a wide choice of trim and equipment options were available, though Toyota quickly realised its slip-up by launching two 1,6-litres in 2005.
In the latest adjustment to the range, all but the 160, 160 SX, and the flagship 180 TX remain of the original MPV line-up.
Perhaps the facelifted Verso’s biggest news is the price shake-up. The 160 remains unchanged at R179 700, while the 160 SX’s price has been slashed to R199 700, and the 180 TX now sells for R227 400 (originally the price of the 180 SX).
As an extra, Toyota SA has decided to tweak the specification and prices of the SX and TX versions and also make a few cosmetic adjustments.
All models receive a revised grille, while the more luxurious models have smoked glass the rear side windows and door scuff plates. Front and rear park assist, standard on the 180 TX, have now also filtered down to the 160 SX. An electric “moon roof” is standard on the range topper.
For an extra R10 000, you could add white leather trim to the 180 SX, though why anyone would need white seats in a family MPV boggles…
The well-equipped range is still powered by an 81 kW 1,6-litre and a 95 kW 1,8-litre, both mated with a five-speed manual transmission.
Toyota’s clever seating arrangement, the Easy Flat-7 system that allows for up to 32 different seating/load arrangements remains unchanged, too.
The Corolla Verso is sold with a five-year/90 000 km ToyotaCare Service Plan with service intervals of 15 000 km. A three-year/100 000 km warranty applies with 24-hour roadside assistance available throughout the warranty period.
