Volkswagen SA this week launched a Sharan derivative powered by the 96 kW 1,9-litre turbodiesel engine sourced from the Passat range. It will cost R328 400.
The powerplant, featuring the Wolfsburg-based company’s pump injection technology, delivers 310 N.m of torque from 1 900 r/min and is claimed to complete the zero to 100 km/h sprint in 12,8 seconds and achieve a top speed of 188km/h.
A Volkwagen SA spokesman this week said the six-speed Sharan TDI would return an average fuel consumption (on the combined cycle) of 6,4 litres per 100km, giving the 70 litre tank a range “of over 1000km”. The urban fuel consumption figure is reportedly 8,2 litres per 100km.
The Sharan seats eight adults including the driver. It features manually-operated air
conditioning, fresh air intake with particle filter, electronic cruise control, interior reading lights, luggage compartment lights, a 10-speaker Gamma radio/tape and sporty front seats that are height adjustable and have armrests.
Furthermore, anti-lock braking system, dual front airbags, high-level brake light, height adjustable three-point inertia seatbelts, front fog lights, child lock on all four doors, remote central locking and an alarm system which can be set to lock on initial acceleration are all standard. All four wheels have a lockable security bolt. Volkswagen SA says.
Multi-function steering wheel, satellite navigation and a six-disc CD changer are optional extras. The high-spec satellite navigation system displays route instructions and a map with a choice of either the immediate vicinity or a wider area.
The wheels are Magny Course 16-inch alloy rims shod with 215/55 R16 tyres. The Sharan TDI is sold with a three-year/120 000km warranty and an AutoMotion plan, which covers all service and maintenance costs for the 60 000km or five years, is included in the list price.
An oil change is required for the Sharan TDI every 7 500km and the vehicle’s service intervals are 15 000 km.
