The head of Mercedes-Benz design says the new platform on which the fourth-generation A-Class is built will eventually underpin “at least eight” variants.
Chief designer Gorden Wagener said that the fresh front-wheel-drive platform would lend itself well to the various designs of the planned new models.
“I can assure you that all variants on this platform – there will be at least eight – will be stunning,” Wagener said, according to CarAdvice.
He said that “the short front overhang, the low front, big wheel size, dash-to-axle [ratio], the whole proportion” of the new platform would facilitate strong design.
So, which vehicles are expected to ride on the platform? Well, as the Australian publication points out, there’s the already revealed hatchback as well as an upcoming sedan version (based on the Concept A Sedan).
Later, we’ll see the new CLA as well as the next-generation GLA and possibly also a GLB crossover. The new B-Class, too, will likely adopt these underpinnings, which leaves space for two more.
Wagener ruled out the possibility of an A-Class convertible, saying “I would not do that”, before also brushing off the idea of an A-Class coupé. The CarAdvice report added that a CLA shooting brake and long-wheelbase A-Class sedan (for China) were other possibilities.
