The internet is flooded with content of the A80 Supra Mk4, its predecessor seems far less loved according to the creator of this widebody A70 Supra. As with many modern makeovers of legends from the past, this creation will, unfortunately, remain in the virtual realm.
The Toyota Supra was immortalised in car culture after the Mk4 derivative featured comprehensively in the Fast and the Furious franchise. Its bubbly aesthetic and formidable 6-cylinder were further popularised in console games during the early 2000s.
The interesting thing here is that the kids who used to watch those movies and play those games are now of age to purchase the machinery that made them tick all those years ago but with that comes a literal heavy price. Its massive influence over a generation of petrolheads has warranted that it is priced out of the reach of many, with certain Mk4 models even more expensive than a brand new Mk5 Supra.
According to Hakosan Designs, the overlooked child in the lucrative Toyota nameplate is the A70 Supra. It was the quintessential stepping stone to the fabled 2JZ motor found in its replacement and its pop-up headlights and silhouette were so tantalisingly 80s cool.
Being overlooked and overshadowed by its replacements, Hakosan Designs decided to give the A70 Supra the love it deserved. Cue a widebody derivative shoehorned with a Japanese motor capable of 500 hp.
No specific motor has been specified above since the creators of this virtual opus state that it can house either the six-cylinder 2JZ or 1JZ or a heavily modified 3S-GTE four-cylinder engine borrowed from range-topping fourth-generation Celica in the late 1980s.
Of course, that is all behind what our eyes can see in these renders. Hakosan Designs has updated the exterior, quite extensively. It gets a widebody, but keeps the pop-up headlights, retains its 80s silhouette but with modern touches like LED lighting and looks good as a result – although the original was a pretty piece of work to begin with.
With virtual creations like this and an R34 inspired next-gen GT-R becoming more prominent, we hope that passionate aficionados will eventually be able to bring these to a reality.
