South African motorists could be looking forward to another consecutive month of fuel price decreases, with initial data pointing towards a fairly big decrease across the board for September.

The rand hasn’t performed as well against the dollar over the past few weeks as it had previously done however the global oil price has experienced a substantial drop which could lead to prospective over-recoveries in local fuel prices. The official fuel price will only be announced by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy on the first Monday of the month, with the updated prices going into effect at midnight on the first Wednesday of the month, so the below figures, based on the current oil prices, is yet to be confirmed.

That said, the local fuel price could see just under a rand decrease across all grades of fuel. Here is what it is tentatively expected to change according to data from the Central Energy Fund from the first week of August – Petrol 93 is expected to drop by 86 cents per litre, Petrol 95 by 81 cents per litre, Diesel 0.05% (wholesale) by 84 cents per litre, and Diesel 0.005% (wholesale) experiencing the largest reduction of 98 cents per litre.

What this potential decrease means most significantly is that the previous several months of fuel price adjustments, accruing to around R2.40 worth of decreases, would result in a fuel price that reflects a net decline in pricing for the year.
