With just 275 examples of the Formula 1-inspired hybrid built, the destruction of another unit is a notable and costly loss. The short clip, shared by social media user Chrimbu, shows the AMG One burning without any sign of a collision. There’s no official word yet on where the incident took place or what caused the fire, but based on the footage, the car appears to have caught fire on its own.
This marks the second known case of an AMG One being destroyed by fire. The first occurred in 2023, when another unit caught alight while being transported in a closed trailer through Staffordshire, England. At the time, Mercedes confirmed that the car was switched off and in the middle of its assembly process, which only made the event more unusual.
The AMG One is no ordinary supercar since it features a complex hybrid setup that includes a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 borrowed from Mercedes’ F1 program, four electric motors, and an 8.4-kWh lithium-ion battery. While there’s no confirmation that the powertrain was to blame, it’s worth noting that lithium-ion batteries can ignite if damaged or exposed to high heat, and once a fire starts, they tend to burn aggressively.

No injuries have been reported in connection with the latest fire. Still, given the car’s limited production run and high price around $3 million (R53.3 million), losing even one is a big deal. Two in less than two years is enough to raise eyebrows, and possibly questions about what might be going wrong behind the scenes.
