Sales of new vehicles in December reflected not only a 27,4 per cent year-on-year increase, but aggregate sales for 2005 was more than 25 per cent higher than in 2004. Taking account sales not reported in detail through Naamsa, the industry achieved a record of 617 450.
Naamsa reported on Tuesday that sales in all four segments of the market (45 814 units in total) during December 2005 had registered significant gains on the corresponding month last year.
Sales reported to Naamsa in detail improved by 115 424 units to 565 018 vehicles compared with the 449 594 units sold in 2004.
December’s new car sales total was 31 135 units – the highest total for that month on record. The new car market in December was 26,7 per cent bigger than in 2004. The sales total for new LCVs, bakkies and minibuses (12 651 units) was also the best ever December monthly aggregate on record and registered an improvement of 2 776 units (28,1 per cent) compared with the 9 875 units sold during the corresponding month in 2004.
Sales of vehicles in the medium and heavy trucks segments of the industry during December also registered strong gains and at 915 units and 1 113 units, respectively, reflected an improvement of 302 vehicles (49,3 per cent) in the case of medium commercials, and 214 units (23,8 per cent), in the case of heavy trucks and buses – compared with the corresponding period last year. The monthly medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales total was also the highest December sales month on record.
