Audi has announced the Q1 compact SUV will join its Q model line-up in 2016. The Q1 will slot in below the popular Q3 as Audi’s entry-level SUV and will prove integral to the company’s aim to broaden its model line-up from 49 to more than 60 models by 2020.
Audi has not released any technological details regarding its Q range-opener, only providing the above rendering and confirming that the Q1 will be underpinned by the Volkswagen Group’s flexible Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform, which currently forms the foundations of the Audi A3 and Golf 7.
Although it doesn’t share the A1’s PQ25 platform, it’s fair to assume that the Q1’s engine line-up will likely mirror that of the company’s entry –level hatchback, so such staples as the 1,4-litre turbopetrol and 1,6 turbodiesel could be on the cards.
“The Audi Q1 is part of our broad-based SUV strategy,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “It is designed on the basis of the modular transverse engine concept and will round off our Q series at the bottom end.”
The Q1 will be produced at the company’s Ingolstadt plant from 2016
