Audi Sport ‘committed’ to R8 but admits it’s facing a ‘complex decision’

Audi Sport says it remains “committed” to its R8 but admits replacing the flagship performance car is a “complex decision”.

Rolf Michl, Audi Sport’s sales and marketing chief, told Autocar the R8 was a “real brand-shaper” for the Ingolstadt-based firm.

“The R8 is one of the most important cars in our portfolio and for the entire Audi brand. It’s a real brand-shaper.”

“Audi Sport is committed to the R8, and we’re doing everything to get a concept for the future. The R8 shares much with the race car, which proves the competitiveness of the car and a clear commitment, but it has to fit future expectations and is therefore a complex decision.”

While Audi has yet to comment directly on the matter, Autocar suggests the third-generation R8 will be fully electric.

Rumours of the R8’s seemingly impending demise have been swirling for some time now, with reports making the rounds in 2016, 2017 and 2018. However, in 2019 the head of Audi Sport said he was “fighting” to keep the R8 (and, interestingly, its naturally aspirated V10) alive…
