BMW’s all-electric 5 Series has been spied, and if convention is anything to go by, it’ll be called the i5.
Not too long ago we saw spy shots of BMW’s upcoming 5er and the picture they painted is one of more conventional styling, perhaps in an attempt to not scare customers away from one of BMW’s best-sellers. While we haven’t seen them in the bare metal just yet, the upcoming 7 Series and X7 facelift seem to feature a split-headlight design, while the 4 Series, M3, M4 and i4 all feature BMW’s plus-sized kidneys.
“Electric Test Vehicle” decals along with the absence of tailpipes suggest that this 5er is the battery powered one, which will likely be revealed alongside internal combustion models when the new 5 Series is shown for the first time around Q3 2022. There are also rumours that an i5 M with three electric motors could be on the way, good for 551 kW and what we can only imagine a significant torque figure.
The new 5 Series will be built on BMW’s updated CLAR modular platform upon which all rear-wheel drive BMW’s currently sit as this platform can accommodate both electric and internal combustion engines.
