BMW’s push toward an all-electric future continues to take shape with the upcoming launch of its first fully electric M models. The first to arrive will be the ZA0 iM3 in 2027, followed by the much-anticipated electric M4, internally codenamed ZA2, in 2028.

According to BMWBlog, these names are still provisional but BMW is expected to finalise the badges closer to the official release although it seems confirmed that the iM3 and iM4 will be underpinned by BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, set to launch next year. The M4 line-up, however, will be exclusively electric, unlike the M3, which will retain an internal combustion variant — rumoured to be the final traditional engine offering in the M3/M4 series. This makes the G84 M3 potentially the last hurrah for petrol-powered M cars.

Though no iM4 prototypes have been seen on public roads yet, insiders suggest that the new model will showcase a dramatically different design. Sources hint at a revolutionary aesthetic that departs from the current M4’s look, opting instead for a futuristic, sportier design aimed at attracting a younger, more diverse audience. Rumours also point to the iM4 drawing inspiration from the upcoming NA2 i4, but will feature distinct M design elements that will set it apart in BMW’s performance line-up.

According to BMW Blog, the iM4 will feature an all-wheel-drive system and incorporate the brand’s “groundbreaking” ‘Heart of Joy’ technology. This innovative platform integrates powertrain software and driving dynamics into a single system, offering a smoother, more connected driving experience. In a discussion with Frank Weber, BMW’s Board Member for Development, it was hinted that this system could redefine how BMW electric vehicles drive, potentially becoming a major selling point for the upcoming M EVs. Rumours suggest this technology could position BMW at the forefront of electric performance.
