BMW has lifted the lid, so to speak, on the M4 Competition Convertible model, and the new open top also ushers in all-wheel propulsion for the M4 which, as previously announced, will also become an option in the Coupe this year.
Due to hit South African shores during the final quarter of 2021, and just in time for summer, the BMW M4 Competition Convertible has the same engine spec sheet as its tin-top cousin. This means a 3-litre, straight-six turbopetrol motor that produces 375 kW between 5 510 r/min and its 7 200 r/min redline, and 650 N.m of torque between 2 750 and 5 500 r/min. 0-100 km/h, BMW claims, will come up in 3,7 seconds, which makes it 0.2 seconds quicker than the rear-driven Coupe.
The M xDrive all-wheel drive system has a rear-biased set-up and it allows the driver to choose from three modes, including a rear-wheel drive set-up for drifting. The M4’s corner-carving ability is further enhanced by an Active M Differential, Adaptive M suspension, M Servotronic steering and M alloy wheels that measure 19 inches at the front and 20 inches round back.
Buyers can also opt for an M Traction Control system that offers ten stages of adjustment as well as an M Drift Analyser and M Laptimer.
Like the latest 4 Series Convertible that it’s based on, the open-top M4 Competition trades its predecessor’s retractable hardtop for a fabric roof which is 40 percent lighter. According to BMW the soft top can be opened or closed in just 18 seconds, and this can also be done while on the move. With the top down, the M4 Competition Convertible can still accommodate 300 litres in its luggage compartment, which is 80 litres more than the previous version offered.
Standard features include the BMW Live Cockpit Professional, including cloud-based navigation, as well as three-zone climate control and ambient lighting. Customers can choose from an extensive list of driver assistance systems, including the semi-autonomous Driving Assistant Professional, with steering and lane assistance.
Local pricing will be announced closer to launch.
