A 1984 Volkswagen Caddy bakkie has been listed on Bring a Trailer with a number of unique customisations made to the powertrain and design. The American-spec model is expected to fetch a bid of over $4 000 (approximately R57 000).

Known in its local region as the Rabbit, this Volkswagen Caddy has been fitted with a DOHC 16-valve 1,8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine sourced from a Scirocco of the same era. This unit benefits from a Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection system and delivers power to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. Just over 164 000 km has been covered by this engine.

The Volkswagen Caddy is finished in Royal Red which is accentuated by a set of 14-inch snowflake wheels and a custom suspension that uses a set of Bilstein front shocks with Neuspeed coils, adjustable rear Koni shocks and an H&H sway bar. Â Enhancing usability is a canopy with a pop-up rear window.

Within the cabin, a black cloth driver’s seat is joined by a blue vinyl passenger seat. Volkswagen-branded carpets, electrically adjustable door mirrors and an aftermarket AM/FM radio head unit with dashboard speakers have been added as well. The current owner admits that the Caddy is in need of a heater core and air conditioning hose replacement.
