This vintage 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 has been modified with a new V8, chassis upgrades and a modernised interior, courtesy of Legacy Overland.

This Japanese 4×4 has been reborn with more purpose and power compared to when it just rolled off the production line around 40 years ago. Legacy Overland, a vintage car restoration firm in the US, has restored this Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 to be louder, more stable and comfortable for 21st century roads.
Legacy Overland, who specialises in restoring classic 4x4s, received this 1985 example in rather poor condition, inside and out. The Connecticut company upgraded the off-roader with the fitment of an improved suspension setup and steering box, while ditching the rear drum brakes in favour of discs brakes. This allows for greater stability and handling whilst driving.
The FJ60’s original engine, a naturally aspirated 4.2-litre inline-six, was replaced with a GM LS3 6.2-litre V8. Some of the upgrades include a rebuilt cooling system, custom air intake and stainless steel exhaust. The V8 is mated with a new five-speed manual transmission, which is incorporated into the original Toyota transfer case with Advance Adapters. The ECU has been reprogrammed, too. This FJ60’s fuel system has been enhanced with a new pump line and filtering system, while a long-range tank of 162 litres have been fitted.
The exterior has been repainted in its original colour, ‘Freeborn Red’, and improved with new weatherstripping and tighter glass seals. The front winch and bull bar have not been changed. Inside, there is two-tone leather and Alcantara upholstery on the dashboard, door panels and Recaro seats. On the facia sits a Pioneer head unit, which is connected to JBL speakers and a Rockford amplifier.
