Following South Africa’s glowing reception of the first-ever BMW M3 Touring when it made its local debut at M Fest 2024 — and the ever-increasing popularity and significance of the latter, SA-based event celebrating BMW M — the local arm of the German marque has made the decision to offer the new M5 Touring in SA.

Indeed, BMW SA has confirmed to CAR magazine that the third-generation M5 Touring is headed our way and will arrive here during the second half of 2025. Local allocation remains unconfirmed, however. Though the automaker has told us only a limited number of examples will be available here.

As a reminder, the M5 Touring employs the Bavarian brand’s M Hybrid powertrain. Comprising a 430 kW/750 N.m 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 and 145 kW/280 N.m electric motor, the plug-in hybrid arrangement produces a healthy 535 kW and 1 000 N.m of torque, sent to BMW’s M xDrive all-wheel-drive system via the firm’s eight-speed M Steptronic torque converter automatic transmission.
According to BMW, the M Hybrid setup’s peak power and torque outputs allow the (2 375 kg, claimed) high-performance wagon to complete the obligatory 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.6 seconds, making it just one-tenth of a second slower to the three-figure marker than its (2 435 kg, claimed) saloon sibling. The top speed is electronically governed to 250 km/h.
However, customers have the option of specifying the M Driver’s package to unlock a top whack of 305 km/h. (À la the SA-spec M3 Touring, we do, however, expect the M5 Touring will be equipped with this package as standard.)
