Set to take effect on 5 August 2026, we detail the price you can expect to pay for petrol and diesel in South Africa…

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMPR) has announced the official fuel prices that will come into effect on Wednesday, 5 August 2026. Here is the breakdown of what you will pay for petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin in the eighth month of the year.
On 5 August 2026, the price of petrol is set to decrease by 52 cents per litre for 93 ULP/LRP and 95 ULP/LRP each. There is a smaller increase for diesel prices than recently predicted, as it will rise by R1.38 and R1.23 per litre for 0.05% sulphur and 0.005% sulphur, respectively. The price of wholesale illuminating paraffin, however, will increase by R1.52 per litre.
The main factor behind the decrease in fuel prices is that the DMRE reduced the slate levy. From 5 August, the slate levy will decrease from R1.14 per litre to 61 cents per litre. The levy is a self-adjusting mechanism the South African government uses to recover cumulative under recoveries of fuel prices. Oil prices at the time of writing are $83 per barrel, compared to $93 on 30 July.
