Drag race! VW Golf R vs. Mégane RS Trophy vs. Porsche Boxster GTS

By: CAR magazine

Yes, it’s another interesting drag race, courtesy of the folks over at CarWow in the United Kingdom. This time, they pitted the Volkswagen Golf R against the Renault Mégane RS Trophy and the Porsche Boxster GTS.

It’s a pretty unusual set of rivals, considering the R-badged Golf is all-wheel drive, the RS-badged Mégane is front-wheel drive (with a manual gearbox) and the GTS-badged Boxster is rear-driven.

For the record, the Euro-spec Golf R’s familiar turbocharged 2,0-litre unit makes 221 kW (as opposed to the 228 kW offered here in South Africa) and the French hot hatch employs a 1,8-litre turbocharged engine sending 220 kW to the front axle. The Porsche, meanwhile, has a turbocharged 2,5-litre four-pot boxer unit offering 269 kW.

Watch the drag in the footage above, which also includes a race from a rolling start and a braking test…
