The largest SUV in the Mercedes-Benz lineup has a history dating back to 2006. Initially known as the GL, it was rebranded to GLS during the second generation’s facelift in 2015. The third generation of this crossover premiered in spring 2019 and received its first facelift last year. Now, repeated sightings of camouflaged test prototypes suggest that another update is in the works, likely to keep the model competitive in the ever-evolving luxury SUV market.
While the front and rear of the test vehicles remain concealed, new taillights are now visible. Last year’s new-generation E-Class was the first to feature LED elements in the taillights styled after the Mercedes-Benz logo, a design choice that garnered mixed reactions. Nonetheless, the company deemed this approach successful, as it will also appear on the updated S-Class and the facelifted GLS. Unlike the E-Class, the GLS will feature three “stars” in each taillight. The front lights on the test models currently lack distinctive features, but it is expected that the new daytime running light style, resembling a three-pointed star, will be adopted, especially since it is slated for the passenger flagship after its facelift.

Speculation abounds regarding the model’s enhancements. The interior is expected to receive updates in line with the latest MBUX infotainment system and possibly new trim and material options to enhance luxury and comfort. Exterior changes, aside from the new light designs, might include a revised grille and bumper designs to give the GLS a fresh and modern look.
There is no confirmed information about technical changes yet, but it is anticipated that the engine lineup will largely remain the same. Presently, all versions of the flagship SUV are mild hybrids, integrating a 48-volt starter generator. The Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 4MATIC delivers an impressive 380 kW and 730 N.m of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 250 km/h. The GLS 450 d 4MATIC boasts 270 kW and 750 N.m of torque, achieving a 0-100 km/h time of 6.1 seconds, also with a top speed of 250 km/h. Speculation suggests that the second facelift of the Mercedes-Benz GLS may debut next year.
