The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) says it has arrested a man and a woman who were nabbed speeding on the N12 in Gauteng, seemingly racing each other home.

According to the Alberton Record, the 32-year-old female was clocked at 181 km/h in an Audi A3, while her 35-year-old male partner was caught at 180 km/h in a Volkswagen Scirocco alongside her. They claimed to be heading to the same house.

The man and woman, along with five other motorists caught speeding during the EMPD operation on the N12 eastbound at the R59 bridge, were arrested, taken to Alberton police station and charged for reckless and negligent driving. They were later released on bail of R1 500 each.

EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said officers on the scene believed the couple was “racing at the time of their arrest”.
