Chinese-owned brand MG has revealed a refreshed version of its Extender in Thailand, with the grille-heavy bakkie set to take on Toyota’s Hilux and Ford’s Ranger.
While MG still has its headquarters in the United Kingdom, the brand is actually a subsidiary of the Shanghai-based (and Chinese state-owned) SAIC Motor company.
Unwrapped at the 2021 Bangkok International Motor Show, the heavily facelifted MG Extender is essentially a rebadged Maxus T70 (Maxus is likewise a SAIC subsidiary). The front end is dominated by that massive chrome-finished grille, along with a split lighting arrangement. Round back, there’s interesting taillamp design, while two-tone 18-inch alloys define the profile.
Inside, MG claims the Extender is more spacious than before and boasts numerous “smart” features. The 10-inch touchscreen, for instance, now supports Apple CarPlay, while the list of “advanced” safety systems includes a 360-degree camera, ABS with EBD, electronic brake assist, stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, lane departure warning and a tyre-pressure monitor (plus disc brakes all round).
The cabin upholstery features a brown-and-black colour scheme, while various surfaces are finished in soft-touch materials. The front seats, meanwhile, are electrically adjustable in flagship models.
The bakkie sticks with the firm’s 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine (offered in both 4×2 and 4×4 guise), which again generates 120 kW and 375 N.m, and can be mated with either a six-speed manual gearbox or an automatic transmission with the same of cogs.
MG in Thailand will offer the updated Extender in both double- and single-cab form.
