GWM is reportedly working on a more extreme version of the P-Series double-cab bakkie to take the fight to the likes of the Ford Ranger Raptor.
According to CarsGuide.com.au, the Chinese firm is developing a new range-topping variant that will likely boast improved off-road ability, more aggressive exterior styling and fresh technologies.
The publication suggests the “Black Bullet” concept revealed in 2020 effectively serves as a preview of the upcoming model, though points out the production version is unlikely to be quite as extreme. It’s furthermore not clear whether an increase in power (either via engine tuning or a fresh powerplant altogether) is on the cards.
Steve Maciver, GWM Australia’s head of marketing and communications, told CarsGuide.com.au the automaker was aware of increasing demand for more hardcore, flagship versions of popular bakkies.
“There might be opportunities. It’s going to have to come down to the right product,” he said.
“Head office has already shown a more extreme version of the [P-Series] unveiled at Beijing last year [in 2020], and that’s something we would look at.
“It’s not something that’s available yet for our market, but if we could get it, we’ll absolutely have a look at it,” he said.
Revealed at Auto China 2020, the concept features a bespoke grille, an aggressive bonnet design and a chunky new front bumper featuring orange trim, towing points and a winch.
The company also added a snorkel, massive wheel arches, chunky side-steps and what appears to be a roof storage system with integrated LED elements. Of course, new alloys wheels wrapped in Nitto “extreme terrain” tyres are also part of the package.
Round back, you’ll find a hefty rear bumper (again with towing points and an integrated winch) as well as large-diameter tailpipes. And inside? Well, rather bizarrely for an off-road vehicle, the concept features plenty of white upholstery, plus yet more orange detailing.
In South Africa, the P-Series (which is badged as the “Poer” in most international markets and the “Cannon” in Australia) range comprises single- and double-cab variants, offered in commercial and passenger trim. All 16 variants feature the brand’s 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which delivers peak outputs of 120 kW and 400 N.m.
