Back in February 2018 when BMW whipped the covers off its second-generation X4, one of the most interesting snippets of information was the introduction of the new M40d derivative. And while this diesel-powered M Performance variant was not part of the range at the local launch, we now have pricing ahead of its arrival in South Africa in the first quarter of 2019.
The X4 M40d will start at R1 165 863, making it some R21 678 more expensive than its petrol-powered sibling, the M40i.
While the M40d – which we drove at the international launch in South Carolina – ships standard on 20-inch alloys, 21-inch items can be optionally specified. Other interesting extras include an electrically operated tow hitch (R11 500), a panoramic sunroof (R21 100), Adaptive M Suspension (R10 300) and a head-up display (R17 000).
As a reminder, the M40d draws 240 kW and 680 N.m from its straight-six turbodiesel heart, completing the obligatory dash to three figures in a claimed 4,9 seconds (one-tenth behind the M40i derivative).
It employs an eight-speed Steptronic transmission (with shift paddles) and xDrive all-wheel drive as standard, as well as M Sport brakes and an M Sport differential.
