Hilux or Ranger? SA’s 2020 double-cab bakkie sales winner revealed…

By: CAR magazine

Wondering which bakkie won the double-cab sales race in South Africa in 2020? Well, we’ve laid our hands on information confirming the results.

While Naamsa no longer releases individual model sales figures to the public (though that didn’t stop use from unearthing the broader bakkie stats for December 2020), a record of sales by body style is indeed kept. Thanks to our studious friends over at Lightstone Auto, we’re able to shed some light on the matter.

According to Lightstone Auto, the Toyota Hilux was the best-selling double-cab bakkie in the country for 2020, retaining its 2019 crown. The Japanese firm’s local arm registered 15 339 Hilux double-cab units during the year, just 845 units ahead of the Ford Ranger (14 494 units). The Isuzu D-Max (5 562) completed the double-cab podium.

And the single-cab race? Well, the Hilux triumphed here as well, with as many as 10 605 units registered. The D-Max (6 117) was second in the battle for the single-cab crown, ahead of the Mahindra Pik Up (2 236) in third. The Ranger (1 962) had to settle for fourth in this workhorse category.

For the record, the broader Hilux range ended the year on 31 252 units (including single-, xtra- and double-cab variants), while the Ranger line-up managed 18 846 units.
