Horse Powertrain’s Horse B20 hybrid engine offers IPX8 submersion protection, 1.1-metre water-wading depth capability, and up to 185 kW for extreme off-roading.

UK-based powertrain specialist Horse Powertrain has unveiled the Horse B20, a fully waterproof internal combustion engine (ICE) built for extreme off-road driving and deep water wading. The innovative unit brings all-terrain capability directly to hybrid vehicle platforms, expanding opportunities across SUV and bakkie categories. Certified to IPX8 waterproofing standards, the engine operates comfortably when faced with water of up to 1.1 metres deep, while maintaining steady power during severe climbs.
Built with extreme hybrid usage in mind
The Horse B20 is a compact 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine designed specifically for hybrid setups. Weighing only 130 kg, the ICE integrates direct injection and turbocharging to generate power outputs between 140 kW and 185 kW, alongside torque ranging from 300 N.m to 380 N.m. The engine relies on an advanced Miller cycle system, which helps it achieve an impressive brake thermal efficiency rating of 48.4%.

Multiple design elements enhance combustion efficiency within the Horse B20. High-pressure fuel injectors and high-tumble intake ports improve air-fuel mixing, whereas specialised pistons utilise the “squish” effect to accelerate cleaner ignition at peak compression. Beyond the cylinders, the unit incorporates a gantry-style aluminium block with an integrated exhaust manifold, a simplified balance shaft system for lower noise and vibration, and a variable displacement oil pump to maintain proper lubrication under heavy loads. Engine temperatures remain controlled through a fully active dual-cooling setup, ensuring reliability during continuous inclines or warm-weather operations.
Submersion protection in real-world driving conditions
Submersion protection on the Horse B20 relies on a fully sealed construction paired with dedicated engine-to-transmission sealing and torsional vibration dampers. IPX8-rated electrical components and sensors actively monitor conditions around the unit. When submerged, the control software reads sensor signals to adjust throttle response or limits output automatically, preserving engine stability while underwater.

First displayed at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the engine powers the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700 off-road SUV as part of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system paired with a three-speed intelligent hybrid transmission. Headquartered in London, Horse Powertrain operates 18 manufacturing facilities and five R&D units globally, delivering powertrain technologies to major automotive manufacturers.
