The high-performance compact sedan is not something we see much of nowadays, especially outside of the premium segments, but Hyundai is hoping to rejuvenate this genre with an N version of its latest Elantra. What you see here are the first teaser images that show the new N model in the flesh, and clearly there will be no mistaking this for a regular Elantra.
Hyundai isn’t saying what’s under the skin just yet, but it’s fairly safe to assume that the Elantra N follow the same technical recipe as the recently facelifted i30 N hatchback, which features a 2,0-litre turbopetrol engine that pushes 206 kW and 392 N.m through the front wheels. The hatch is now also offered with a dual-clutch gearbox, which is likely to find its way into the Elantra too, but at this stage it’s not known whether the sedan will feature a manual gearbox option.
Furthermore, buyers can expect a lowered chassis that’s been retuned to suit the sporty nature of the Elantra N model. The saloon also boasts a large aerodynamic rear spoiler that counteracts lift, while other design highlights include unique red trim along the lower edges of the car (and also matched by the brake callipers), large dual single exhaust tips, a bold diffuser and arch-filling N-specific alloy wheels.
Given that Hyundai no longer sells the Elantra in South Africa it’s unlikely that we’ll see this sports sedan on local shores, but last we heard buyers can look forward to the facelifted i30 N hatchback hitting local shores this year.
