Hyundai is adding some much-needed heat to the compact performance sedan market with its first-ever Elantra N.
As a sibling to the i30 N and Kona N performance models, the Elantra N is powered by the familiar 2,0-litre turbopetrol engine, which produces 206 kW and 392 N.m. The engine is paired with an eight-speed DTC dual-clutch transmission and with the N Grin Shift mode activated, an overboost function can temporarily increase the maximum output to 213 kW.
The Hyundai Elantra N is also fitted with an electronic limited slip differential, variable exhaust valve system and launch control. With the latter activated, the Elantra N needs just 5,3 seconds to sprint from 0-100 km/h, Hyundai claims, while the top speed is listed at 250 km/h.
The Elantra N is the first Hyundai to be fitted with an integrated drive axle, inspired by WRC tech, which integrates the drive shaft, wheel hub and bearing. The design enables a 1,7 kg weight saving, and Hyundai says it also helps the car to better withstand lateral g-force. The Korean carmaker also claims to have sharpened engine response by integrating the intake duct and air cleaner in the intake compartment.
The Elantra N is fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels and 245-size Michelin PS4S tyres, as part of a comprehensive exterior package that also includes a bolder bumper design, a generously sized rear spoiler, side skirts and plenty of red and gloss black throughout.
Given that the Elantra sedan is no longer sold in South Africa, it’s unlikely that this new N model will make it to local shores, however local buyers can at least look forward to the facelifted i30 hatchback as well as the Kona N.
