The finalists in the running for the 2020 World Car of the Year award have been announced at Auto Expo 2020 in India, with the original list of candidates whittled down to just ten.

In addition, the organisers named the five finalists in each of the five World Car Awards sub-categories.

So, which vehicles are in the running for the overall award? Well, here they are, in alphabetical order: Hyundai Sonata, Kia Soul EV, Kia Telluride, Range Rover Evoque, Mazda3, Mazda CX-30, Mercedes-Benz CLA, Mercedes-Benz GLB, Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen T-Cross.

Meanwhile, the Kia Soul EV, Mini Cooper SE, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio and VW T-Cross are in contention for the 2020 World Urban Car award, with the BMW X5, BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz EQC, Porsche 911 and Porsche Taycan set to battle it out for the 2020 World Luxury Car gong.

The 2020 World Performance Car finalists are the BMW M8, Porsche 718 Spyder/Cayman GT4, Porsche 911, Porsche Taycan and Toyota GR Supra, while the Alpine 110S, Mazda3, Mazda CX-30, Peugeot 208 and Porsche Taycan are in the running for the 2020 World Car Design of the Year prize.

A jury of 86 international automotive journalists selected the finalists by secret ballot based on their evaluation of each candidate as “part of their professional work”. At the Geneva International Motor Show in early March, the World Car Awards will announce the top three finalists in each category as well as the winner of the 2020 World Car Person of the Year.

The overall victor as well as the winners in all five vehicle categories will be officially declared at an awards ceremony and press conference to open the New York International Auto Show on 8 April.
