BMW Group South Africa CEO Tim Abbott will step down at the end of 2020, with South African-born Peter van Binsbergen to move into the role at the start of 2021.

Some 25 years ago, Van Binsbergen was responsible for product planning, marketing and sales at BMW Group SA. He then moved to BMW Japan, where he was director of marketing, before heading to Munich, where he led the department responsible for sales channel development and the “Future Retail” programme.

Thereafter, Van Binsbergen headed up the sales and marketing operations at the BMW Brilliance joint venture in China, before assuming the role of senior vice-president for BMW Group customer support in 2018.

The 62-year-old British-born Abbott has stepped down to “focus on projects close to his heart” in South Africa.

“BMW Group South Africa has been my home for the past six years and I would like to thank my colleagues – past and present – for their support and encouragement,” said Abbott.

“I have been outspoken in my commitment to transformation and conservation during my tenure here, and I will carry this determination for change with me into my new roles and projects,” he added.

Meanwhile, Van Binsbergen said it was a “really exciting time to be involved with BMW Group South Africa”.

“I am looking forward to building on the tremendous work by Tim and his team to strengthen the position of BMW Group South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. I am also really looking forward to coming home again after 18 years abroad.”
