
The Chinese automotive marques continue to gain traction in South Africa, with the likes Chery and Haval making notable strides in recent months. Here’s how they performed in the passenger vehicle segment during February.

According to the latest Naamsa passenger vehicle statistics for February 2024, Chery Auto South Africa recorded sales of 1 504 vehicles, while Haval Motors SA sold a total of 1 132 vehicles locally and exported an additional 18 cars.
Chery’s lineup showcased a robust performance, with its Tiggo series leading the pack. The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro emerged as the top-selling model, accounting for 964 units sold. Following closely behind were the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro, with 328 and 212 units sold, respectively.

In comparison, Haval Motors SA saw strong demand for its passenger vehicle models, particularly the Haval H6 and Jolion. The Haval H6 secured the top spot for the brand, with 569 units sold domestically and an additional 11 units exported. The Haval Jolion also performed admirably, with 544 units sold locally and 5 units exported.

GWM showcased a modest performance with its Ora and Tank 300 models. The GWM Ora recorded sales of 8 units, while the Tank 300 saw 11 units sold domestically and an additional 2 units exported. Taking the light commercial vehicle segment into account, Haval also managed to sell 378 P-Series bakkies while the smaller and more affordable Steed managed a total of 146 units in the month. This puts the overall Haval sales tally for February at 1 656 units.

These sales figures reflect the growing acceptance of Chinese automotive brands among South African consumers. Factors such as competitive pricing, advanced features, and improved quality have contributed to this shift in consumer perception. Furthermore, the ongoing expansion of dealership networks and enhanced after-sales services have bolstered consumer confidence in these brands.
